MAMA CHEW

ZERO WASTE

RECYCLING PROGRAM

On average, Australians use 130kg of plastic per person each year and only 9% of that gets recycled! More than frightening still, up to 130,000 tonnes of plastic will find its way into our waterways and into the ocean.

Silicone isn’t plastic, in fact most say it’s closer to the rubber family. Food grade silicone (the materials we use to make Mama Chew branded products) is durable, and more ocean-friendly than plastic. It lasts longer, and stands up better against heat and cold than plastics. It’s safer for your family, too, with no estrogen-mimicking toxins like BPA to worry about. It is odorless, stain-resistant, hypoallergenic, and has no open pores to harbor harmful bacteria.

While silicone replacements alone won’t fix our global plastic problems, swapping plastics out for silicone is a step in the right direction.

Until silicone is more widely accepted as a recyclable material there is a good chance that a lot of it is going into general waste which is where Mama Chew want to step in

Silicone is recyclable! Even though you might not be able to leave it with your roadside rubbish collection yet, it can be incinerated safety without toxic off-gassing. When burned, silicone reverts back into its harmless ingredients: amorphous silica, carbon dioxide, and water vapor (unlike plastic which releases toxins when burned).

INTRODUCING THE MAMA CHEW ZERO WASTE RECYCLING PROGRAM

How it works?

TerraCycle Zero Waste Boxes allow you to recycle almost every type of waste. Simply follow the steps below to recycle your waste with us and make a positive impact on our planet.
  1. Register your interest by filling out the form below.
  2. We will email you a shipping label returning your products to our studio.
  3. If you live local to the Northern beaches you can drop off to reduce your footprint even further. I will also have a collection box available at all market stalls listed in my social highlights.
  4. When we have enough products to fill our zero waste box we will return the box to Terracycle for recycling while making a small but positive impact on our planet.

What happens to the waste?

The collected waste is mechanically and/or manually separated into fabrics, metals, fibers, and plastics. Fabrics are reused, upcycled or recycled as appropriate. Metals are melted so they may be recycled. The fibers (such as paper or wood based products) are recycled or composted. The plastics undergo extrusion and pelletization to be molded into new recycled plastic products.

Mama Chew is effectively acting as the middle man collecting all your old baby products that would normally be heading off to landfill. we ship them back to terracycle to be recycled and repurposed into something else.
